Maps, the Compass and Libraries
Cartography, the Compass and waypoints, the Map Atlas, Shovels, Signal Flares, and studying at Libraries.
Cartography
A Crafting skill for people who love exploring. Level 1 (1 Skill Point) lets you craft a Compass and Map Marker Kits and recycle maps for Parchment. Level 2 (1 Skill Point) lets you craft a Shovel, see Silver Buried Treasure, and makes your Compass wear slower. Level 3 (2 Skill Points) lets you craft Signal Flares, see Gold Buried Treasure, and makes your Compass wear slowest.
| Item | Recipe | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Compass | 40 Refined Oil + 10 Wood + 10 Iron Slag | Cartography 1 |
| Map Marker Kit | 1 Acorn + 5 Oleander Flowers + 2 Parchment | Cartography 1 |
| Shovel | 10 Refined Oil + 10 Wood + 10 Iron | Cartography 2 |
| Signal Flare | 10 Refined Oil + 5 Wood + 10 Gyront Shells | Cartography 3 |
Compass and waypoints
Open Map (from the Compass in your Bag) shows the whole world: your estates (Manor, City House, Castle, Oil Wells, Crystal Huts, Research Labs, Libraries, War Camp, Armories), every City you've visited, the maps in your Map Atlas, your Golems, your lit Signal Flares, your City Keys and your own Roc Shrines and Guard Towers (each with a free Visit) and the Great Library. Your Manor, City House, visited Cities and War Camp can be visited from the map too, for the same Roc Feathers as from Estates. Zoom anywhere — there's no range. Tap one and choose Set as Waypoint: an arrow on the edge of your circle points to it, with the distance. You have one waypoint at a time. An Explorer (Specialization) can also tap any open spot on the map and make that the waypoint, and record the spot they stand on as an Explorer Map for Refined Oil (type a name under the map) — handy for a Cave field you found; it stays in your Map Atlas and on this map. Your Territory Maps and Explorer Maps are also listed in the Maps tab of your Profile: other players see their names and dates, only you see where they are.
A Compass wears only on days you use it (opening the map or setting a waypoint): 3.3% a day (about 30 days), 2% with Cartography Level 2, 1% with Level 3. It doesn't wear inside a Trade Post. At 0% it works one last day, then breaks.
Map Marker Kits and the Map Atlas
- Inside a dungeon, use the kit from your Bag to make a Dungeon Map: the route of rooms from the entrance to the room you're in. While you're in that dungeon, a note at the top tells you the next room to take.
- Outside, the kit makes a Territory Map: every Flag you can visit within 25 km — your own, your Kingdom's, City Flags, Public Flags and Normal Flags you have passage on. Show them on the Compass map.
- Tap a building or structure and choose Mark Location to save it as a Map Marker. You can't Visit from a marker, but it shows on your Compass map and can be your waypoint.
- Your maps are kept in the Map Atlas at the top of your Bag. With Cartography Level 1 you can recycle them: a Map Marker or Dungeon Map gives 1 Parchment, a Territory Map gives 3.
Shovel
With a Shovel in your Bag, tap any item on the ground and choose Bury (you'll be asked to confirm): it disappears for every player. Dig Here (from your Bag) brings back every buried item near you — anyone's, not just yours. Each Bury or Dig uses a little of the Shovel (100 uses). If you bury something valuable, mark the spot with a Map Marker Kit.
A Shovel can also move plants. Tap a fully grown Mourning Tree, Great Fern, Dusk Tree, Oleander Bush or Thistle that stands on your land (your own Flag's or your Kingdom's) or on land nobody has claimed, and choose Dig Up: after 20 seconds it goes into your Bag (one Shovel use). Tap Plant on it in your Bag to put it back in the ground, fully grown, where you stand — again only on land you control. Its Berry, Sap or flower grows back before you can pick it. Trees weigh 5 kg in the Bag, a bush 3 kg, a Thistle 1 kg.
Buried Treasure
Little dirt mounds with a chest poking out are hidden all over the world, and they move to new places every few days. Tap one and choose Dig It Up — you need a Shovel (one use).
| Treasure | Who can see it | What's inside |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze (most common) | Everyone | One of: Wood, Stone, Iron Ore, Leather, Silk, Oleander Flowers, Fern Sap or Crude Oil |
| Silver | Cartography Level 2 | One of: more Wood, Stone, Iron Ore or Leather, Pearls, Sulfur, Dark Essence, a Violet Heart or Parchment |
| Gold (rarest) | Cartography Level 3 | 3-5 Parchment plus Pearls, Dark Essence, Violet Hearts or Gem Dust |
Signal Flares
Set one up from your Bag where you stand (on land) and give it a name. Only you can see it. When one of your buildings within 10 km is set on fire or burns down, the nearest flare lights up for 3 days: that notice and every notice from around it in those 3 days carries the flare's name, and lit flares show on your Compass map.
Libraries
Buy a set of Library Blueprints at the Great Library in Alexandria, Egypt (500 Food) — Visit it from Estates for Roc Feathers by distance (up to 100). Then build a Library on any City Flag's land with the Blueprints + 10 Stone + 5 Wood (one per City).
- Study: 20 Food for Pages. You can study at each Library only once (your own too) and only once a day. The first Library gives 200 Pages, and each new one gives 200 more than the last (up to 5,000).
- Parchment: 5 Food each, one per Library per day.
- The owner can add a Gold fee (0-100) to studying and to Parchment, and keeps that Gold. Each paid fee sends the owner a Mail from the student and a System chat line.
Every Monday (Malaysia time), whoever had the most different players study at their Libraries that week (each player counts once, however many of your Libraries they visit) wins the Conan the Librarian Helm, a Weekly Trophy Hat.
Tip: Visit a different City's Library every day — each new one is worth more Pages than the last.
